Symposium Report
Overview

The 8th International Symposium, “After 15 Years, into the Future — Life after the Great East Japan Earthquake,” marked the 15-year milestone since launching the Fukushima Health Management Survey (FHMS). The program consisted of three main sessions: presentations on findings obtained from the FHMS, discussions on how experiences from disasters can be applied to the future, and an Open Lecture for Residents, designed to communicate important information in an accessible manner.
The symposium was conducted in a hybrid format, combining an on-site venue with live Zoom streaming.
Experts from Japan and abroad participated, presenting insights from their respective fields and engaging in active discussions on future prospects.
In the Opening Session, Executive Director YASUMURA Seiji delivered a presentation titled “Overview of the Fukushima Health Management Survey,” outlining the structure and scope of the survey.
In Session 1: “Fifteen Years Since 3.11: Progress through Challenges,” faculty members of the Center presented key findings and remaining challenges from the Basic Survey and four detailed surveys of the FHMS. The session was followed by an interactive discussion addressing audience questions.
During the Keynote Lecture, Dr. LAURIER Dominique, Deputy Head of the Directorate of Health Research and Expertise, French Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority (ASNR), presented the latest epidemiological research on health risks associated with low-dose radiation exposure, followed by a Q&A session.
In Session 2: “The Future in Disaster-Affected Areas – Building a Brighter Tomorrow,” Dr. KAMIYA Kenji, Chair of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation, spoke on the health effects of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Dr. KATO Hiroshi, Director of the Hyogo Institute for Traumatic Stress, presented activities aimed at protecting mental health after disasters.
In Session 3: “Open Lecture,” Professor ISHIKAWA Tetsuo of our Center explained radiation in the context of other environmental exposures, while Professor GOTO Aya of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health spoke on health literacy.
