Radiation health effects in Fukushima Prefecture

Fukushima Medical University’s Radiation Medical Science Center has been commissioned by Fukushima Prefecture to conduct the Fukushima Health Management Survey (FHMS) for the citizens of Fukushima Prefecture since June 2011, in order to monitor and promote their long-term physical and mental health.

Thus far, the Thyroid Ultrasound Examination (TUE) program has not confirmed any health effects due to radiation from the nuclear power plant accident. In addition, Pregnancy and Birth Survey results shows that rates for preterm births, low birth weights, and congenital anomalies have been consistent with pre-disaster rates. The Center will actively continue to seek, analyze, and disseminate scientific evidence for domestic and international awareness.
