A National Taiwan University Medical Student Visits the Center to Learn About Post-Disaster Health Initiatives in Fukushima

2026/10/30

On October 26, a medical student from National Taiwan University College of Medicine, who is currently studying at Fukushima Medical University as part of an academic exchange program, visited the Radiation Medical Science Center for the FHMS with a sixth-year student from FMU School of Medicine who had previously studied at National Taiwan University. The visit provided an opportunity to learn about efforts to support the health of Fukushima residents following the Great East Japan Earthquake and the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

During the visit, the student learned about our Center’s activities through a presentation by Prof. Irisawa, Director of the Office of Public Communications and International Cooperation, on the earthquake and the background behind the launch of the Fukushima Health Management Survey. The student also watched a video featuring Prof. Yasumura, Executive Director of the Center, introducing the Survey at an international symposium.

With the restart of nuclear power plants being discussed in Taiwan, the visit prompted active discussions on the health effects of radiation and the impact of evacuation on health. It was a valuable opportunity to deepen the students’ understanding of the current situation in Fukushima, the relationship between disasters and human health, and the importance of providing long-term health support within local communities.

The Center will continue to share information about the current situation in Fukushima and its initiatives through various opportunities and channels to deepen public understanding of our activities.
