Executive Director Yasumura gave a Presentation on the Fukushima Health Management Survey at the SMR Workshop Organized by the International Union of Radioecology (IUR) on September 14, 2026

At the “Japan SMR Workshop,” which brought together experts to discuss the environmental and social impacts and challenges associated with small modular reactors (SMRs), an emerging next-generation nuclear power technology, YASUMURA Seiji, Executive Director of the Radiation Medical Science Center for the Fukushima Health Management Survey, gave a presentation in the session titled “Lessons from Fukushima.”

In his presentation, Prof. Yasumura discussed the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and its impact on local communities, as well as efforts since the accident to protect and support the health, medical care, and welfare of Fukushima residents. He also shared scientific findings and insights obtained through the Fukushima Health Management Survey (FHMS).

Prof. Yasumura also highlighted the large number of disaster-related deaths in Fukushima Prefecture associated with evacuation and prolonged evacuation life, in addition to direct deaths caused by the earthquake and tsunami. During the Q&A session following the presentation, participants engaged in an active exchange of views on appropriate approaches to evacuation in the event of a nuclear disaster and the support needed to protect residents’ health.

The workshop provided participants with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the initiatives and findings of the FHMS, as well as the importance of epidemiological studies for assessing the long-term health effects following a nuclear disaster.
