Students from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Learned About the Fukushima Health Management Survey

2026/06/26

Two medical students from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, currently participating in a short-term academic exchange program, visited the Radiation Medical Science Center for the Fukushima Health Management Survey on June 22.

During the visit, Specially Appointed Professor Takagi, Director of the Office of Public Communications and International Cooperation, provided an overview of the Fukushima Health Management Survey and engaged in an active discussion with the students through a question-and-answer session.

The students also met with Professor Yasumura, Executive Director of our Center, and exchanged views on the grand design and implementation of the large-scale survey involving more than two million Fukushima residents. Topics included the survey’s overall framework and long-term objectives, as well as the challenges and difficulties encountered in conducting such a comprehensive, population-based study. The students were particularly impressed by the message encouraging people to “come and see Fukushima,” “learn about Fukushima,” and “share what they have seen and learned” in Fukushima Prefecture 15 years after the complex disaster.

Following the discussion, Professor Shimura, Vice Director of our Center, introduced and explained the Thyroid Ultrasound Examination program. The students observed the examination process firsthand, including hands-on ultrasound examination processes, fine-needle aspiration cytology procedures, explanations provided by the support staff, and the entire process from appointment scheduling through follow-up care.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for the students to gain a deeper understanding of the role and significance of long-term epidemiological studies, health monitoring, and post-disaster support.
