IAEA Board of Governors Visits Fukushima Medical University and Receives Briefing on the Fukushima Health Management Survey

2026/01/28

On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary KAIFU Atsushi, Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, together with ambassadors from four IAEA Board Member States - the Philippines, Chile, Ghana, and Thailand - visited Fukushima Medical University (FMU).

Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding in December 2012, following the Great East Japan Earthquake and accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the IAEA and FMU have implemented a wide range of collaborative projects in the field of Human Health. These initiatives include STS (science, technology, and society) projects, radiation education, and risk communication.

During their visit, Professor Yasumura, Executive Director of the Radiation Medical Science Center for the Fukushima Health Management Survey, provided an overview of the Survey, now in its milestone 15th year, and introduced its latest findings. The briefing helped deepen the ambassadors’ understanding of the Survey’s long-standing commitment to supporting the health of Fukushima residents since the disaster.
