On January 7, a group of 15 scholars from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health visited our Center
Executive Director, Dr. Yasumura, provided an overview of the Fukushima Health Management Survey, followed by a presentation by Dr. Tsubokura, Director, Office of Health Communication, on risk communication during the Great East Japan Earthquake. During the Q&A session, there was an active exchange of views and opinions on the social impacts of the disaster, post-disaster mental health initiatives, and how healthcare professionals can contribute to radiation education and risk communication in Fukushima. Some participants commented that the visit was a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of disaster-related deaths and post-disaster activities of medical professionals.
The scholars also observed initiatives related to telephone-based support conducted as part of the Pregnancy and Birth Survey and the Mental Health and Lifestyle Survey, as well as a demonstration of Thyroid Ultrasound Examination procedures explained by Vice Director Dr. Shimura.
