National Taiwan University Medical Student Visits Our Center

2025/10/08

On October 6, 2025, a medical student from the National Taiwan University College of Medicine, currently studying at our university through an academic exchange program, visited our center.

Executive Director Dr. Yasumura provided an overview of the Fukushima Health Management Survey, highlighting ongoing efforts to support local governments and residents through the survey, which has continued for 14 years since the disaster. He also explained the center's response to the complex disaster involving the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident.

The student also toured the Thyroid Ultrasound Examination room under the guidance of Vice Director Dr. Shimura, gaining a better understanding of the examination process and management system.

During the visit, it was noted that Taiwan had conducted import inspections of Japanese food products for 14 years, confirming that all items met both Taiwanese and Japanese safety standards (compliance rate: 100%). Based on these findings, Taiwan recently announced its decision to lift import restrictions on Japanese food products, including those from Fukushima Prefecture.

The student showed a strong interest in effectively communicating scientific evidence in an accessible way, leading to an engaging discussion on risk communication and science-based public understanding.

This visit provided a valuable opportunity to deepen understanding of the relationship between disasters and health and the importance of long-term health support for affected communities.
