On March 12-13, 2025, FMU hosted an IAEA Consultancy Meeting
A two-day consultancy meeting, jointly organized by Fukushima Medical University (FMU) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), convened at FMU’s Fukushima Ekimae Campus in Fukushima’s city center.
This meeting was the latest in a series of international conferences held by FMU and IAEA, addressing various issues related to nuclear emergencies. Their multidisciplinary approaches incorporate a science, technology, and society (STS) framework to advance radiation education and risk communication.
The global COVID-19 pandemic put FMU-IAEA conferences online for a few years. In contrast, this face-to-face meeting brought together 29 participants from 9 countries for a total of 23 presentations, extensive discussion, and training.
Topics included recent results of the Fukushima Health Management Survey, an introduction to radiation education for students at FMU, radiation risk communication in Fukushima, and communication among medical professionals, patients, and residents. The meeting furthered discussions on STS related to nuclear disasters, and the current situation in Fukushima was shared among experts from Japan and abroad.
The importance of coordinated recovery in the area around the site of a nuclear accident, risk communication after a nuclear disaster, and disaster preparedness were emphasized.
