YASUMURA Seiji

[Biography]

Dr. Yasumura graduated from Yamagata University School of Medicine in 1984, where he subsequently completed coursework to obtain a PhD in Medicine.

In 1988, he launched his career as a visiting researcher in the Department of Epidemiology at Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology, and later became chief researcher. From 1993, he progressed from assistant professor to associate professor in the Department of Public Health at Yamagata University School of Medicine. In November, 2000, he was appointed to Fukushima Medical University’s Department of Public Health as its Professor and Chair. His research fields are Epidemiology (including Disaster Epidemiology), Public Health, Gerontology, and Prevention of Lifestyle-related Diseases. In 2006, he was appointed as the Vice Dean of FMU School of Medicine. From 2017, he served as a Corporate Director (Education and Research) and Vice President (Academic Affairs). From 2020, he served as a Corporate Director (FHMS and the School of Health Sciences) and Vice President of the University (FHMS). The nominal retirement age allowed Prof. Yasumura to relinquish these roles as of March 31, 2024, to devote himself full-time position of Executive Director of our Center.

After the Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, he engaged in the Fukushima Health Management Survey as a Vice Director of the Radiation Medical Science Center for the FHMS. On June 22, 2023, he became the Center’s Executive Director.
