UNSCEAR outreach event was held at FMU
A team of specialists from the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR)※ visited Japan on July 19-20, 2022, for a series of outreach events.
Dr. Gillian Hirth, Chair of UNSCEAR’s 66th through 68th sessions; Ms. Borislava Batandjieve-Metcalf, current UNSCEAR Secretary; and Dr. Mikhail Balonov, Lead Writer, held meetings with Japanese government officials, Fukushima residents, and other stakeholders to present and exchange views about their latest findings, published in UNSCEAR’s 2020/2021 Report Annex B, “Levels and effects of radiation exposure due to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station: implications of information published since the UNSCEAR 2013 Report.”
As part of this mission, the UNSCEAR team visited FMU on July 20, 2022, and held an explanatory session, attended by approximately 80 students in the fourth and third years of our medical curriculum, a smaller cohort of graduate students, and various FMU faculty members.
※United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR)
UNSCEAR was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1955, as concerns were rising about environmental and health effects from numerous atmospheric nuclear tests in the 1950s. From a purely scientific, politically neutral standpoint, UNSCEAR assesses the levels and effects of exposure to ionizing radiation on human health and the environment. It reports yearly to the UN General Assembly and regularly submits comprehensive reports with detailed scientific annexes.
